They're 351 heads, but in 1978 the chambers grew in size to 69cc and the valves got smaller. They went from 1.84/1.54 down to 1.78/1.45. These were meant to reduce emissions and improve low end torque.

If a choice between the 289 and the 86 5.0L heads I would go the the 289 heads. The E5 heads are different from the E7's. The E5 has 69 CC chambers and very restrictive exhaust ports.

Lay a head gasket on the head and scribe the outline of the cylinder, but when porting stay inside the line as the gasket is 4.100 while your cylinder is 4.00 or 4.030 or whatever.
