When it doesn't, the condenser stays on and still has 24v at the terminal that the yellow going to the condenser is connected to. In other words, I can disconnect the yellow wire from the thermostat and the condenser keeps going. The multiwire doesn't have a yellow wire; there is another separate thick copper wire which has been wired to the Y terminal on the existing terminal.
