If I recall well, the neck Rod showed is on a maple guitar. That may have to do with the choice (although I believe more of the straw colored mahogany has been used in recent times). I've also heard them described more simply, by saying that basswood has a similar tone to mahogany, but brighter. Some of Reb Beach's Surhs are basswood, with a maple top.
